As indicated at the end of the last chapter, youth work and an associated inclusive masculinity were performances that did not necessarily extend to all aspects of their lives, even when they thought it probably should. The reaction of helplessness that people described around not confronting heteronormativity and even homophobia in many context of their lives, and the consequent separation that they insisted on between their personal, professional and student lives as a way of avoiding the dissonance and double consciousness that this helplessness engendered, extended to their inconsistencies and hypocrisies around how they lived their heterosexualities.

However, the maintenance of a separation between the private and the public did not hold. When probed, participants were still susceptible to hegemonic constructions of heterosexuality, but once exposed, quickly denied them or internalised the guilt they felt for having them. This seemed to be precisely because they had not explored them, or even developed a language to explore them, leading to conceptual confusion and further cognitive dissonance. A song that emerged from these discussions is called, ‘now you know how it feels’ (see Appendix). It was initially based on the heterosexuality questionnaire mentioned in the previous chapter, which inverts statements commonly made about LGBT communities to help heterosexuals see their own privilege. However, the song evolved, incorporating some of the constructions of heteronormativity that emerged in the research from verse three onwards.Vrs 3: every ones the one’s, till there is another

Men taught not to speak, even to each other

And when honest have to add, no homo

Women can flirt together, as long as it’s for blokes.
